Sometimes, the best plans in life are the ones that were never made. Such is the case for Jess, the general manager of the Captain Fairfield Inn in Kennebunkport. With an eye towards a career in theater, a job posting for the hotel caught her eye, and the rest is history. Read more about her unique experience in this coastal town.
Q: What drew me to hotel management?
To be honest, I kind of fell into it! I moved up north from New York, where I was a freelance theatrical technician. I saw a Craig's List ad for a housekeeping position and thought, "I can do that!" I got the job and then realized that hospitality is just immersive theatre. I fell in love with Lark as a company and with my "show must go on" mentality, I was cast into management.
Q: What's your favorite place to hang out in Kennebunkport?
My favorite restaurant here in Kennebunkport is Old Vines Wine Bar, hands down. They have the best cocktails and the atmosphere there is a funky, laid back, and chic at the same time. It was slated to close in April 2015 but new owners materialized at the last second and kept it going. When I found out, I put some baggy pants on over my pajama pants and practically ran over there for celebration drinks.
Q: What'a the best compliment you've ever received at the Captain Fairfield Inn?
A: Hands down, "We feel like we're at home, but we don't have a curfew and the food is better."
