There is so much to do and see in Kennebunkport, but we also love a short day trip to neighboring Biddeford. This mill town is undergoing a revitalization driven by some fantastic food and drink entrepreneurs that love the supportive community there. With a different vibe than chic, coastal Kennebunkport, Biddeford is a fun city to spend an afternoon in, exploring the Pepperell Mill and all the unique shops. Here are three of our favorite new Biddeford restaurants for the next time you're on a lark to Southern Maine.
Farm to Coast got its start as a food truck in the Portland area. After the prep kitchen the truck relied on threatened to close, the chef and owner Brian Grossman decided to open his own café. Now serving breakfast and lunch in the Pepperell Mill, you can find some of the same hits from the food truck. Steamed buns, banh mis, and breakfast sandwiches are particularly popular. The mill is also home to Banded Horn Brewing, Round Turn Distilling, Rabelais Books, and Sweetcream Dairy.
Find fine dining in Biddeford at the diminutive Elda. The menu from James Beard Award-nominated chef Bowman Brown showcases local seafood and seasonal fare. The menu changes frequently, so it's always exciting to see what the chef and his crew have prepared. From Maine union sourdough waffles to sweet potato mochi, the creative fare here will mentally transport you to the culinary scene of a much larger city.
In addition to Elements, this new Main Street coffee shop is another great place for coffee in Biddeford. Roasting their own coffees on site, this shop brews blends and single-origin specialty coffees. Enjoy a cup of the day's drip coffee or an espresso drink in the airy shop. A small selection of baked goods, like sweet breads and hand pies, are available to tide you over.
