When you're on a trip to our boutique Cape Cod hotel The Coonamessett, there are lots to do and explore in the town of Falmouth. For a fun day trip, we always tell our guests to venture out just a short drive south of Falmouth to experience the various things to do in Woods Hole. It's a great place to explore the beaches, savor a great meal in a waterfront restaurant, and learn about the world-class oceanographic research that takes place here. Add a day trip to Woods Hole to your vacation agenda for a great mix of education, natural beauty, and fun.
For good ocean views, hike out to The Knob, one of the most popular things to do in Woods Hole. This thin, rocky neck is at the end of a mile-long sandy path. Walk through the coastal shrubs to reach the vantage point, where you'll have a great view of New Bedford to the west, the Cape Cod canal entrance to the north, and the Elizabeth Islands to the south. It's a short hike that pays off with a spectacular panoramic view.
Bring your bike or walking shoes and set out on the Shining Sea Bikeway, a 10.6-mile multi-use path, established in 2009 on the bed of an old railway. From cranberry bogs to salt marshes, the bike path traverses a wide variety of Cape Cod landscapes. It's a great place to stretch your legs before you head into town for a drink or dinner.
This museum is small, so it doesn't take long to tour the collection of art and historical artifacts. With traditions of sailing and biological research, Woods Hole has a rich history and that this museum captures that. The small boat shop and workshop are must-see for any sailor or wooden boat aficionado.
World-class ocean research happens in Woods Hole, at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, which offers tours to the public. Check out the deep-sea submarine that discovered the Titanic, tour the state-of-the-art labs, and see the research vessels at the dock. This tour is one of the more popular things to do in Woods Hole, so be sure to reserve your spot ahead of time.
Many of our favorite waterfront restaurants are seasonal, but Water Street Kitchen is open year round. With chic nautical decor and great cocktails, you'll love this spot for happy hour. Enjoy specialty cocktails and a small plates menu that's perfect for sharing. The menu changes with the season and many ingredients are made from scratch.
