Kick off the freaky festivities with the annual All Souls Walk at the Brick Store Museum in Kennebunk. Costumed guides will lead you through the nearby Hope Cemetery and regal you with tragic tales of Kennebunk residents from the past three centuries - think sea captains, soldiers, and spinsters. Return to the museum for light refreshments and walk through the gallery to view the portraits of several of the dearly departed featured during the walk. You don't often hear the words "snug harbor" and "haunted house" in the same sentence, but that's exactly what you'll find at this local farm's annual Halloween celebration. Starting at dusk each day on October 30th and 31st, you'll find some good old fashion fun and fear inside the barn at this picturesque Kennebunk farm. Once you're sufficiently haunted, save some time to tour the grounds - the flower fields will be abloom, and the produce stand should be well stocked with local apples and corn. For the young and young at heart, there's no substitute for tried-and-true trick or treating. Head to Dock Square in Kennebunkport (costumed or not) and enjoy sweet treats at all the shops along the way.

First, you can't beat the location of our hotel when it comes to enjoying some playtime outdoors with your dog. Dogs are allowed off-leash on Plum Island beach after October 15th and until May 15th, so you and your dog can walk right out our door onto the sand. Dogs aren't allowed in the National Wildlife Refuge (south of our hotel on Plum Island), but the public beach to the north is all yours. In Newburyport, there are several off-leash dog parks, and we also love the Clipper City Rail Trail, a 1.1 mile paved pathway that winds its way around the harbor. The Maudslay State Park is a must-visit for any dog owner who also is a horticulture buff. This 480-acre estate turned state park has beautiful gardens and walking paths. Dogs on leash are welcome.

Dogs are welcome on most Newburyport restaurant patios, so if the weather is right, you can enjoy a meal on the deck with your pooch. We love the Newburyport Brewing Company for a flight of beer on the patio. Dogs are welcome here and always loved on by the friendly brewery staff. Head to Plum Island Coffee Roasters (where your pup is welcome inside) to rest with a warm drink after a dog park romp. In 1884 the Boston Globe carried an article entitled "A Mystery of the Seas." It told of a portrait with a very strange history. "Looking at it closely," said the reporter, "you can see that it is very rough and creased, the effect of salt water." The portrait was of a sea captain named James Fairfield of Kennebunk, Maine and its mysterious history is linked with that of Captain Daniel Nason whom Kenneth Roberts immortalized in his novel The Lively Lady. It makes a fascinating tale

A good-looking, self-assured man, Fairfield was dark and handsome, if not tall. Five and a half feet tall and stocky, he had curly sable-brown hair and long sideburns. His eyes too were dark brown and direct as well. Only a few years younger than Nason, James Fairfield was born in Arundel in the district of Maine in 1784, the son of William and Sarah (Burnham) Fairfield. His father, a ship captain (or sailing master as they were called then), was the grandson of John Fairfield who had come to Kennebunk from Worcester, Massachusetts, about 1725. James Fairfield had numerous brothers and sisters but was especially close to his sister Mary, familiarly known as Polly, who was just a few years younger and who married Joseph Lord in 1805.

Like his father, James Fairfield sailed ship owned by Tobias Lord, Jr. In 1806 the newly-built brig Somers was put under his command when it was launched. The following year on November 12, James was married to Lois Walker, daughter of Daniel Walker. Shortly thereafter he and his brother-in-law Joseph Lord bought a house and six acres of land on South Maine Street in Kennebunkport from John Perkins. Since both men were mariners and much of their time was spent at sea, their joint ownership of property had several advantages not the least of which was that their wives were not left entirely alone when one or both of their husbands were away.

According to family tradition, it was on a voyage shortly after his marriage that Captain Fairfield decided to have his portrait painted at one of the first ports he visited on his trading mission. Being in the cotton trade he frequently sailed to Charleston, South Carolina, or New Orleans,then to southwestern Europe, on to England and then back to New England.

Since he was not coming directly home, he sent the portrait to Lois by another ship. Imagine his surprise and disappointment when he arrived back in Maine months later and he discovered that not only had his portrait not yet arrived, but that the ship by which it was sent had been lost at sea!In 1810 the command of another newly-launched, two-masted square-rigger, the Adrastus, was given to Fairfield. Letters that he wrote to his wife have been preserved at the Brick Store Museum in Kennebunk. One was written to Lois from Charleston in 1811 where he had put in for provisions after an unusually long coastal passage lasting sixty-three days. He hoped to get freight for either Spain or Portugal.

"My voyage will be much longer than I expected when I left home but after going to Europe I Shall Come home if my life is Spared," he promised her.

Fairfield's life was spared; but, with the coming of President Jefferson's hated embargo and the War of 1812, both he and his brother-in-law Joseph Lord felt called upon to enter into a privateering venture with Captain Daniel Nason and two other sailing masters, Joseph Perkins and Abner Stone. No sooner had they successfully made their way out of Kennebunkport on their brig Macdonough, which had been named for the stunning victory on Lake Champlain two months earlier, than they were captured on November 1, 1814, by the British frigate Bacchante and taken into Halifax.

In a letter written on November 17th, James related the story of their capture to his wife Lois:

. . . the next morning after leaving home we fell in with the Frigate Bacchante which gave Us Chase at 2 PM Both of Our Topmasts wint Over the Side which Made Us a Compleet Wreck but by heving our guns Over Board and other articles to lighten our Vessel She did not Make us her prize before 7 in the Evening.

Fairfield and Lord were both put on board the British ship Penelope and in a few days were being transported to England with 250 other American prisoners in their ship and another accompanying frigate full of prisoners. James was most concerned for his wife and wrote to tell her to turn to Captain Tobias Lord for help if she needed anything.

I think he wont let you Suffer," he said.

On another occasion he assured her that they were all well and in good spirits considering their situation. He suggested that she sell her horse to cut down on expenses and to sell anything else she might need to, rather than suffer any deprivation.

"I don't know what Part of England we Shall go to but Shall write Every oppartunity. Could you find out where I am Nothing but my Liberty would give me more Pleasure than a line from you."

Perhaps Captain Fairfield and his friends would not have been in such good spirits had they known that their destination was the dreaded Dartmoor Prison. It was the day before Christmas when James Fairfield, Joseph Lord and the rest of the Arundel crew were checked into this formidable compound and issued only a hammock, bedding and blanket.

Four months later the men were still at Dartmoor when the bloody massacre of prisoners took place there on April 6, 1815. James described it to Lois,

"the Ridiculous and Infamous Conduct of our Commander in this place Barbarously and cruelly fireing upon us . . . and killing 8 and wounding 45 of the poor Innocent and defenceless prisoners." "Fortunately" he said, "none of our Kennebunkers fell Victim to British cruelties on that never to be forgoten day."

The days in prison following the massacre must have been the worst of all. From the beginning, Fairfield realized that he would be imprisoned
"Untill peace which god Send may be soon."

The day that he was incarcerated at Dartmoor, the Treaty of Ghent had been signed, but news of the signing did not reach this country until February and peace was not proclaimed by President Madison until February 17, 1815. From that time on, the men expected to be released from prison. As Fairfield wrote to Lois,

"I soon did expect to be clear from this prison but our expectations have failed owing the negligence of our agent. ... My anxiety to get home is beyond description," he told her in a letter sent by the cartel ship on which Captain Nason had been allowed to return to Kennebunkport.

Fairfield had hoped himself to be in that first draft of 250 men who boarded the cartel ship in Plymouth on April 20th. He had, in fact, bought another man's place on that ship, but to his bitter dismay, when the prison authorities called out the name of the prisoners, the man he had given the money took his own turn and left Fairfield to wait for his.

While he did not have much money, he still had a little cash, "thank god and good friends," but the conditions were very disagreeable, "being confined within the dismal walls of a prison deprived of all the comforts of life and the agreeable and pleasing company of a wife and friends."

At length, James Fairfield's name was called, he and his brother-in-law were released, transported by a cartel ship, and ultimately discharged by the British on July 3, 1815, in time to celebrate their own independence day on American soil.

The year after their return they were living in a new double house on the corner of Green and Pleasant Streets in Kennebunkport. Lois' father had given to her and her husband six acres of land here in 1813 as a measure of his affection and appreciation of their many kindnesses to him.

There were no houses on the land then, but about the time Nathaniel Lord built his mansion on the opposite corner, the Fairfields completed their big house, and in September of 1816 they sold half of the house and land to Joseph Lord so that he and Polly could continue to live under the same roof. Neither James Fairfield nor Joseph Lord, unfortunately, were destined to live long in the house. The ship Joseph was commanding in 1817 in the cotton trade to Europe was lost at sea. His widow Polly soon married again. Her husband's brother Captain John Lord was the groom, and they continued to live in the house conjoined to the Fairfields' home.

Early in the summer of 1820, James Fairfield became mortally ill and on July 23rd he died at the age of thirty-six. Lois sold their part of the house on Green Street to his privateering associate Abner Stone and probably lived with Polly and Joseph until her death the following year. It was two years after Fairfield's death that the unusual event occurred. Word was sent to Tobias Lord from a Swedish bark that had come into Portland that his presence was requested on board their ship. There on the Swedish ship was the life-like painting of Captain James Fairfield. In the background of the portrait was a ship under sail and flying an American flag. Furthermore Fairfield was shown holding a letter in his right hand to Messieurs Tobias Lord and Co., Kennebunk, Maine, his employers at the time.

It was the letter in his hand that made it possible for the painting to be delivered to Kennebunk at last. Apparently the portrait had been rolled up and put in a tin case when Fairfield sent it home from the port where it had been painted. After the ship in which it was conveyed went down, the encased portrait was buoyant enough to make its way to the surface of the water and travel many miles away where it was spotted and retrieved by the men on the Swedish ship.

So it was that Polly Lord received the portrait of her brother after his death. The painting and the story of its history were cherished by her descendents and one hundred and seventy-five years later the address on the later shown in his hand prompted the inheritor of the portrait to make it possible for it to be returned once again to Kennebunk, where it can now be enjoyed by all who visit the Brick Store Museum.

Winter is one of our favorite times to walk along the long, sandy beaches at the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge. The national refuge within this barrier island off the coast is just a few miles from Blue—Inn on the Beach. The area was specifically developed to provide habitat for migrating birds, so it's a big bird watching destination. Enjoy a beach walk on a sunny, winter day and then warm up back at the inn's beachside hot tub.

Ashumet Holly Wildlife Sanctuary | Ashumet Rd, East Falmouth | (508) 362-7475

This 45-acre preserve is part of Mass Audubon, so you know there's good birdwatching on the property. Especially so around the large (8 acres!) pond—robust habitat for waterfowl and songbirds. The mile-and-a-half long, wonderfully named Mystery Tree Trail meanders through the woods and along the pond, surrounded by over 1,000 holly trees.

The Knob | Quissett Harbor Rd, Falmouth

If you're looking for good ocean views, head south towards Woods Hole and hike out to The Knob. Part of the village of Quissett, this small rocky prominence is at the end of a mile-long sandy path. Walk through the coastal shrubs to reach the vantage point, where you can see New Bedford to the west, the Cape Cod canal entrance to the north, and the Elizabeth Islands to the south. Take the stairs down to Crescent Beach, which overlooks Buzzards Bay.

With three miles of trail and nearly 400 acres of woods, this property borders Highfield Hall and Gardens. Once part of the Highfield Estate, the woods are now preserved by the Town of Falmouth and open to the public. Walk the trails past ponds and through woods, wetlands, and pastoral farmland. When you need to warm up, head to the Highfield House for a tour of the historic home and its grounds.

Biking in Salem

You can easily bike to any of Salem's downtown attractions from our boutique hotels The Merchant and The Hotel Salem. If you're looking for a longer ride, you can ride out to Winter Island Park overlooking Salem Harbor via a paved bike path. Pick up the path off of Bridge Street and then follow it onto Memorial Drive (while there's no bike lane here, it's a relatively quiet street). Take Winter Island Rd. out to the park where you'll find historic Fort Pickering, a public beach, and Winter Island Light. It's about a 4-mile loop from either of our properties, so it's an easy adventure and makes for a nice afternoon picnic.

Mountain bikers will want to head to Salem Woods for over 10 miles of single track mountain biking trails. Pick up the trailhead in the back of the Olde Salem Green Municipal Golf Course and follow the yellow trail for a fun ride through the woods. The trail is maintained by the local chapter of the New England Mountain Bike Association, so there are boardwalks built over soggy spots, some flowy sections with banked turns, and some technical rock crossings to keep it interesting. While nearby Lynn Woods is a well-known spot for mountain biking in the greater Boston area, Salem Woods is a bit off the beaten path and so tends to be less crowded.

After a bike adventure, we like to refuel with a stop at Live Alive, a vegetarian/vegan café and juice bar. If you're more of the mindset that all that physical activity earned you an indulgence, head to Howling Wolf Taqueria, where a hearty plate of nachos and a margarita will be your reward. With that, you've got yourself the makings of a great afternoon of biking in Salem.

First, pick a destination for your day trip. Many of the Stowe area's roads offer great vistas of the peaks and valleys full of fall foliage. Head south to Ben & Jerry's Factory Store in Waterbury, just 15 minutes from Stowe. Enjoy the vistas on the way and then reward yourself with a factory tour with free samples at the end. Cold Hollow Cider Mill, also in Waterbury, is a great stop for the whole family with free samples of cider and maple products. On your drive to and from Stowe, you'll have the chance to see the beautiful colors of the maples, birch, and oak trees.

Or take drive up to the top of Mount Mansfield, the highest point in the state, via the toll road to see the fall foliage for miles. If you'd like to look around on your way up, you can ride Stowe Mountain Resort's gondola up the mountain. This enclosed gondola, used as a ski lift during the winter, takes about 20 minutes to get to the top, where you can hike around some summit trails or just take in the view at the scenic overlook and rest area.

The ocean temps are dropping, and compared to the air temperature, it’s enough to make one feel like beach season is over.

Which it is…but only kind of.

Here in Newport there’s still plenty of late fall light, color and fresh air to enjoy—and as we recently discovered, there’s a fantastic way to take in the crashing surf and blustery breezes in a totally season-appropriate way—on horseback!

Lately, we’ve been appreciating the elegant beauty of horseback riding on the beach in Newport. It’s a fun (and honestly, exotic) way to experience the coastline while enjoying a new activity that for most people is something totally out of the ordinary.

Newport Equestrian offers something for everyone—from the curious young horseback riding enthusiast to the competitive equestrian and thankfully, also tours and shore rides for the complete horse novice.  

You can enjoy a leisurely two hour beach trail ride that winds down to Second Beach while overlooking Saint George’s Castle above.

Now combine that adventure with a delectable picnic, some fine libations, a good book and perhaps a food rub, and you’ve got yourself a romantic and completely relaxing fall afternoon in Newport.

Visit a maple sugarhouse

Spring is maple season in Stowe, VT, when the temperatures reach above freezing during the day, but still dip below freezing at night. The sap starts to run and Vermont sugarhouses tap their trees to capture the liquid that will eventually become maple syrup. During maple season, many sugarhouses welcome visitors to see the process and take a taste. Wear your boots—spring is notoriously muddy in Vermont! 

Get outdoors

Stowe, VT is a playground for outdoor enthusiasts and spring brings a number of new ways to enjoy the Green Mountains. Trout fishing season begins in mid-April. Once the snow recedes from the trails, it's time to go hiking in Stowe. We love to explore Mount Mansfield and its expansive views from the top. Stowe, VT is also a destination for mountain biking, with tons of double and single track trails. And for birdwatchers, spring means migration, as seasonal species return to Vermont. With an Audubon Center nearby and great birding along the Rec Path, Stowe is a great place to go birding.

Relax on a family-friendly beach

Located just under a mile from Block Island Beach House, Fred Benson Town Beach has all the amenities to make for a good family outing. With a wide, white sand beach and gentle waves, there's plenty of space for kids to play, plus a lifeguard on duty to help parents relax. A concession stand and a short walk between the parking lot and the beach mean this is one of the more popular beaches in Block Island. Take in the view from a lighthouse tower

Located on the south end of Block Island and overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, the Block Island Southeast Light offers tours in the summertime. Kids will love climbing the brick tower to see the original Fresnel lens. Parents will love the unique Gothic architecture, which helps to put the Southeast Light on the National Historic Register. The views of the island, nearby Mohegan Bluffs, and the ocean makes this one of our favorite things to do with kids on Block Island.

Beachcomb at Mohegan Bluffs

These 150-foot tall cliffs on the southern end of Block Island are the island's most impressive geographic feature. With over 140 steps down to the beach, this attraction is best for fit adults and older kids—but the trek to the secluded beach below is worth it. Kids will love exploring the rocky shores and searching for ocean treasures. The view from the cliffs is expansive, and you can even see Montauk on Long Island on a clear day.

Mohegan Bluffs | Spring St, New Shoreham

Mansion Beach | 1701 Mansion Rd, New Shoreham

This Block Island beach sits about 3 miles north of Block Island Beach House and is best accessed by taxi, bike, or moped. Because it's a little bit out of town, it tends to be less crowded, although it is a popular beach because of the beautiful expanse of sand and larger waves. Great for those looking to play in the waves or body surf, Mansion Beach is named for the old mansion that once sat overlooking the beach. It burned down in the 1960s, but you can see how the site was the perfect spot for a grand estate overlooking the ocean.

Andy's Way Beach | Andy's Way and Corn Neck Rd, Block Island 

Andy's Way is located on Great Salt Pond, making it perfect for families or people who want calm water. The "pond" is connected to the ocean, so this beach is still tidal, meaning there's less beach at certain times of the day. But there's still plenty of room to lay out on the soft sand. Clamming and kayaking are popular activities on Great Salt Pond, and the pond is home to many species of wildlife, making the bird and animal spotting great here. 

Mohegan Bluffs | 121 Mohegan Trail, New Shoreham

The island's famous cliffs are also home to a great beach that is one of the most secluded on the island. While this beach is rockier than the rest, it's still a great place to take in the beautiful vista created by these 200-foot tall cliffs surrounding the beach. Come prepared to earn your spot on the beach though—the beach is accessed by 140 stairs down to the water. We think it's worth it to visit one of the prettiest beaches on Block Island.

Overlooking Great Salt Pond, this bar and grill is one of the best places for oysters on Block Island thanks to its great views, outdoor seating, and fresh seafood. The oysters here are local and freshly harvested and given a unique spin by the chef. Try oysters Japanese style, with miso glaze and spicy red wakame seaweed, topped with Parmesan and grilled, or with the restaurant's signature watermelon champagne mignonette.

This combination seafood market and restaurant is located right in the heart of New Shoreham and easily walkable from our boutique hotel. Enjoy freshly shucked oysters on the patio overlooking the town, plus a large menu offering all the classics—lobster rolls, fish and chips, and fish tacos. If you don't want to eat in, the market is a great place to grab some oysters to go and try your hand at shucking.

Just a short jaunt north of Block Island Beach House, this surf n' turf restaurant is across the street from the beach, offering unobstructed views of the sand and surf. Goodnight Fatty began in 2016 as a pop-up in a coffee shop after the owners, Jennifer and Erik Sayce, dreamed up the idea after walking home from dinner. Turns out they weren't the only ones with a late-night sweet tooth, as customers flocked to get a the best cookies in Salem and a glass of milk. Snickers, Oreos, S'mores, peanut butter, brownies all make their way into Goodnight Fatty's cookies, with flavors rotating nightly. After the success of the pop-ups, the Sayces found a permanent space, but still operated as a pop-up. The space was used during the day as a business conference room, so after the office workers went home for the day, the bakery employees had to set up the mobile bakery for the weekend. Now, Goodnight Fatty has its own space, in a former carriage house owned by the Peabody Essex Museum.

You can get your fix at breakfast too, with "chubbies" or breakfast buns filled with eggs and other savory ingredients. If you need to rent paddling equipment, check out this rental shop on Mountain Road in Stowe. Rent kayaks, canoes, and stand up paddleboards by the half day, full day, or several days. From this shop, strap your equipment to your car, and head to one of these nearby lakes or rivers.

This state park is adjacent to Waterbury Reservoir, which is an 850-acre lake that is up to 100 feet deep in some spots. The public boat launch is located in the state park and from there you can paddle around this lake to take in the changing leaves, the native species on the shoreline, and the beautiful Vermont sky.

Winooski River | Waterbury 

This signature river in the area runs from Cabot to Lake Champlain and offers many great opportunities for paddling near Stowe. The Friends of Winooski River have published a great guide to paddling where you can find the best put-in spots, where the dams and rapids are, and a guide to all the plants and animals you'll see during your trip. 

Wood End Lighthouse | Long Point, Provincetown 

This brick lighthouse and its close neighbor Long Point Light help warn ships of the shifting sands of Long Point, which makes up the southern side of Cape Cod as it curls around Provincetown Harbor. This lighthouse is visible from P'town, but the adventurous can hike out to the point. Walk to the beach from the jetty located on the western end of Commercial Street at low tide. Be aware of the tides, as the high tide can cover the jetty and make for a dangerous return. Plan to walk for over an hour to reach the lighthouse and its unique vantage of the harbor.

Long Point Light | Long Point, Provincetown

Take the same approach over the breakwater and beach to reach Long Point Light, even further out this undeveloped point on Cape Cod. The area used to have a fishing village here, but eventually everyone moved into present-day Provincetown. This lighthouse was built before Wood End Light, in 1827 and is unmanned today.

Race Point Light | Race Point, Provincetown

Race Point Light is on the northern tip of Cape Cod. We recommend the trek out to Race Point Light, a two-mile walk or a drive requiring an over-sand driving permit. Your efforts will be rewarded with the quiet solitude and beautiful views of the northern side of Cape Cod. Tours are offered on select days throughout the summer. Private companies also offer dune tours that visit this lighthouse of Provincetown.

Newburyport Whale Watch seasons runs from May to October. Not only is it more pleasant weather for boating during these months, but the whales have migrated back into the area after taking a trip to warmer waters for breeding. The waters off of Newburyport are some of the most populated whale feeding grounds in the world. Known as the Stellwagen Bank, the natural geography of the ocean floor here creates a great upwelling of plankton and fish that attract all kinds of marine mammals.

Newburyport Whale Watch will take you on the 106-foot Captain Lady III, a specially outfitted whale watching charter boat, out the Merrimack River and into the Gulf of Maine. The captain and crew will decide to head to a number of popular feeding grounds based on whale spotting reports and locate a number of whales for you to observe. The naturalists on board are trained to identify specific individuals they've been seeing for years and can provide all the information you may want to know about whales. Spot humpbacks, minkes, fin whales, and dolphins, as well as seals and sea birds.

During your whale watch, you can expect to be out on the water for 4 to 4-1/2 hours. Breakfast, lunch, and snacks are included with your trip, while you should bring anything you need for a day at sea, including sunscreen, hats, and layers. It's always colder at sea! The boat does have a heated/air-conditioned cabin where you can take a break from the elements. With everything taken care of, you can relax and experience the joy of seeing the majestic animals up close. You won't want to miss a whale watching trip in Newburyport during your stay at Plum Island!

Once you cross the Sagamore Bridge onto Cape Cod, take a scenic detour on Route 6A, or Old King's Highway. This road passes through some of the oldest villages in the country, making it a great place to take in quintessential New England. With trees, stone walls, cranberry bogs, and historic homes on view, Route 6A is a great introduction to the charm of Cape Cod. Stretch your legs in Brewster at Nickerson State Park, where the Cape Cod Rail Trail provides 22 miles of leaf peeping on Cape Cod.

The Cape Cod National Seashore is a great place to enjoy the show that is the changing fall foliage on the Cape. A huge swath of protected beaches, dunes and marshland, the National Seashore stretches from Chatham to Provincetown and has miles of walking trails. You'll find plenty of scrubby evergreens, but also red maple, oak, and beech trees. Their changing colors, right next to the ocean, provide a great picture of the Cape's unique beauty in the fall.

You can also enjoy the fall bounty of the Cape at Cape Cod Winery with a tasting of their Cranberry Blush. Located in East Falmouth, this family-owned winery makes several varieties of wine from Cape-grown fruits like grapes, blueberries, and cranberries. A $10 tasting fee (which includes a souvenir wine glass) lets you sample a number of these great Cape wines while relaxing in the tasting room. A visit to this winery is the perfect cap to an afternoon of scenic leaf peeping on Cape Cod.

The bitter brew perfectly cuts the sweetness of the baked goods and is a great stop if you find yourself dragging mid-afternoon.

This coffee and ice cream shop is a popular place in Oak Bluffs to pop in for a quick cup of coffee. No espresso machine here, but plenty of hot Seattle's Best coffee to keep you energized and warm you up. The shop also serves ice cream and other sweets, so it's a great stop for the whole family. Enjoy a fresh cup of coffee at any of these three coffee shops in Oak Bluffs the next time you're on a lark to Martha's Vineyard.

If you need to rent a bike when you arrive in Falmouth, bike shop Corner Cycle is the spot. Located less than a mile from The Coonamessett, the bike shop rents hybrid bikes that are perfect for cruising roads and bike paths. Helmets and bike locks are included with each rental, and trailers and tag-along bikes are available for your little cyclists. We also offer Solé bicycles right on property! Once you're outfitted for biking in Falmouth at Corner Cycle, you can hop onto Cape Cod's most popular bike path, the Shining Sea Bikeway, only two blocks from the shop. (Staff can direct you and provide a map too.)

The Shining Sea Bikeway is a 10.6-mile multi-use path, established in 2009 on the bed of an old railway. It runs from North Falmouth to Woods Hole, with Corner Cycle located 3.5 miles from the southern end. It's a pleasant ride to cruise down to Woods Hole and spend some time exploring the village before you head back to Falmouth. This section of the bike path runs along the water, so there's ample opportunity to cool off with a quick dip in the ocean. Or you can ride north from Corner Cycle to North Falmouth for different scenery. This stretch is more wooded, with Cape Cod's signature cranberry bogs and salt marshes. Stop and explore the Salt Pond Bird Sanctuary and try your hand at some bird watching. Whichever direction you choose, the Shining Sea Bikeway is a must for any active traveler looking to go biking in Falmouth.

There are three galleries, each with their own exhibit themes, and regularly occurring events for children, teens, and adults. Jeff Falls | Route 108, Jeffersonville

This waterfall in nearby Jeffersonville is a cooling oasis in the hot summer weather and easy to get to. Head north on Route 108 towards Jeffersonville and about 1/2-mile from the center of town, look for a pullout on your right. The road comes close to the Brewster River here, making it an easy walk to the small falls. Several pools above and below the falls are great for swimming, with the lower pool being surprisingly deep. The falls are only 7-feet high, and several smaller falls can be found upstream too. Explore, swim, and relax on the rocks at this serene Vermont swimming hole.

Twenty minutes northeast of Stowe, Lake Elmore State Park is a popular spot for boating, swimming, and sunbathing. The state park sits at the northern end of the 219-acre lake and has facilities, a snack bar, and boat rentals. Enjoy lake swimming at its finest, explore the shore in a kayak, or lay on the big, sandy beach for the day.

Ranch Brook | Ranch Brook Rd, Stowe 

This swimming spot in Stowe is part of the Stowe Land Trust property, Adams Camp. It's open to the public for hiking, fishing, mountain biking, and swimming. Park by the Adams Camp Bridge and then walk along the river to find your spot. The shady river is the perfect spot for cooling off, picnicking, and swimming in Stowe.

The trail is paved, but it's more challenging than you may think with short steep hills and curves that wind through the sand dunes of the Cape Cod National Seashore. Follow the whole trail and you'll see the area's famous dunes, cranberry bogs, a beech tree forest, and inland lakes and ponds. Trail extensions will take you to Race Point Beach, the lighthouse, and Life-Saving Station Museum at Race Point. Herring Cove Beach is a short bike ride north from AWOL, and you can access the bike trail from here too.

If you'd like to enjoy a kayak tour, Plum Island Kayak offers many, the most popular a daily tour that varies in its put in spot and destination based on the conditions. Explore the marshes and estuaries and see the fish, reptiles, and birds that inhabit these unique ecosystems. One of our favorite recommendations to our foodie guests is Salem Food Tours. These walking tours showcase Salem's food and drink scene with stops at some of Salem's best restaurants, coffee shops, breweries, and distilleries. Tours include a minimum of 5 stops, and you'll hear from chefs and passionate business owners, as well as your tour guide.

The original walking food tour is a perennial favorite, lasting about 3-1/2 hours of sampling, wine tasting, and walking. From old world Italian at Bambolina to modern Japanese at Kokeshi, you'll love what the Salem Food Tours' partners serve up. This walking tour is a great way to learn about Salem's restaurant scene and sample some amazing food all in one go.

The morning coffee walk is a great overview for those looking for a short overview of where to eat and drink in Salem. Just an hour and a half, this tour includes coffee, pastry, and a spice tasting as you learn about the maritime and trade history of Salem. Newport Cooks is our favorite cooking class in Newport. Started by Mary Weaver and a partner in 2008 after a career of innkeeping and event management, Newport Cooks offers 2-hour classes where the expert chef helps you to master a cuisine or a particular dish. Class topics range from making pasta, sauce, and pesto to baking French macarons. Classes focusing on global cuisine like Indian curries, Spanish tapas, and Eastern European baking are offered, while Chef Mary focuses on farmers' market finds, teaching you to cook dishes that use fresh, locally-grown seasonal ingredients like mushrooms, strawberries, beets, and herbs. Mary is also a wine connoisseur and carefully chooses each classes' wine pairings.

Newport Cooks classes are held in a private kitchen with plenty of workspace, sharp knives, and gas stoves for the best and most delicious results. Classes are offered for kids, as well as private classes, which are great for bachelorette parties, birthdays, and corporate events. In Orleans, The Alley maintains the tradition of candlepin bowling on the Cape. Unique to New England, candlepin is played with a smaller ball that doesn't have holes in it and 10 pins that are skinnier than tenpin. If you're a good tenpin bowler, you'll be surprised to find candlepin is much harder! Many candlepin bowling alleys are old-school, but The Alley is updated with a modern restaurant and bar program. The menu features barbecued meats, from wings to brisket, and traditional BBQ sides like collard greens and mac and cheese. Add in an extensive beer and bourbon list and The Alley is worth visiting for food and drink alone—but try your hand at candlepin bowling too.

Seafood towers are the eye catching plates here, and we particularly love the grilled lobster and corn—just like it sounds, it's a split, whole lobster, grilled and served with corn on the cob. Much easier than a whole, steamed lobster with no bib required.

With an ever-growing number of breweries, Portsmouth is well-established as a beer town. Stowe Tasting Tours is run by the Umiak Outfitters (who also organize one of our favorite dog sledding tours in Stowe). With three options to choose from, these winery and brewery tours in Stowe will provide transportation, a guided tour of the facility, and samples. Try the Microbrewery Tour and visit several different breweries, learning about the process and story behind each unique Vermont brewery. From The Alchemist and Rock Art Brewery to Lost Nation and Von Trapp, the breweries you'll visit make a wide variety of styles, so you're sure to find a style of beer you enjoy. If you're not so much into beer, hop on the Cider and Spirits Tour. The Stowe area has three distilleries and two cideries, where you can tour the facility and learn about the fermenting and distilling process. Fall weekends bring this fun fall event to the Seashore Trolley Museum. Ride one of the historic trolleys out to the pumpkin patch and pick out your favorite pumpkin. If you can't make it to the Pumpkin Patch Trolley event, the Seashore Trolley Museum is still worth a visit. Maine is full of great apple orchards, and nothing says fall like picking a peck of apples. In neighboring Wells, Spiller Farm offers a picturesque fall activity near Kennebunkport. The staff can recommend an apple variety for fresh-eating or baking and point you in the direction of the appropriate trees. Grab a basket and an apple picker (a tool for helping you reach apples up high in the trees) and head out to the orchard. Bring a picnic and enjoy lunch or a snack by the pond, where ducks and geese complete the scenic picture.

Halloween on Summer Street | Summer St, Kennebunk

If you're in Kennebunkport on Halloween, lucky you. Start the evening with a tour of historic Summer Street in downtown Kennebunk. These former sea captains' homes are decorated to the max, with community members putting on haunted houses in their garage and offering treats to the trick or treaters. Visit this street between 5-9 p.m. on Halloween, when it's closed to cars and filled instead with community members enjoying this great fall activity in Kennebunk.

Martha's Vineyard in the summertime is all about the beach. From long days spend on the sand to taking in sunsets over the water, no summer vacation to the Vineyard is complete without some beach time. Oak Bluffs Town Beach | 83 Seaview Ave, Oak Bluffs

Also known as Inkwell Beach, this small beach is conveniently located close to downtown Oak Bluffs. Because of its proximity to town, this beach is not where you go if you want to be alone with nature, but rather offers the quickest access to the water for a dip. The water here is calm, with gently sloping sand bottom. Inkwell Beach overlooks the ferry terminal, meaning you'll be entertained by harbor traffic at one of the best beaches in Oak Bluffs.

Joseph Sylvia State Beach | Beach Rd, Edgartown | (508) 627-6145

A little bit further east, this beach in Oak Bluffs offers more gentle waves and a two-mile long stretch of sand. Go for a long walk on the beach and look for sea glass or be daring and jump off the "Jaws Bridge," featured in the movie. People love this beach for its placid atmosphere and calm waters. Conveniently located close to Oak Bluffs, Joseph Sylvia State Beach is also a great beach to bike to, as it's easily accessible by the town's bike path.

Eastville Beach | Beach Rd, Oak Bluffs

This small beach is in a unique spot, by the drawbridge that spans the channel between Oak Bluffs and Vineyard Haven. Located on a small point overlooking Vineyard Haven Harbor, this scenic beach is great for sunbathing and wading. The waters here, while beautiful, are part of a busy boat channel with a strong current, so swimming too far out isn't recommended. But like our other recommendations, this beach is easily one of the best beaches on Oak Bluffs because of its soft sand, great views, and gentle waves.

Our first ever Halloween party kicks off Friday, October 25th at 8pm in the Coonamessett Ballroom. Tickets are $15 and include a night of dancing, with live music provided by Crooked Coast, Neon Falls, and Buddahfly. "Trunk" or Treat events are the latest way to keep kids safe on Halloween—kids trick or treat from participants' decorated cars in the afternoon, making for a great community event. Join the Falmouth Methodist Church's trunk or treat with your little ghosts and goblins on Sunday, October 29th from 3-4:30pm. In addition to candy and decorated cars, there will be a bounce house, carnival games, and a petting zoo, making this a fantastic family-friendly celebration. Maple syrup has been around for hundreds of years, adding a touch of sweetness to life long before the colonists arrived in these parts. Although the equipment has been updated, the process remains pretty much the same. Usually starting in late February, the clear "sweetwater" begins to flow and is collected in buckets hung from the trees. In a good year, one large tree can produce as much as 60 gallons. That might seem like a lot, but that sap will be boiled down over a wood fire to about one a half gallons of syrup. Once it flows from the tree, the sap must be processed within a few hours or it will spoil, so Maine's syrup makers work around the clock once the spring run has started to make as much of the sweet stuff as possible. 

While the degree of sweetness is now set by law, each batch of syrup is as unique and temperamental as the various parts of our great state. Sometimes the syrup is dark and rich, other times pale gold and delicate. Just like the wines produced on the left coast, it all depends on the soil, terrain, wind, and weather.

So layer up, pull on your wellies, and venture out for a truly Maine-made adventure into maple country!

Some of Carmel's architecture was influenced by the creative process, reflecting the quirky interests of its owners rather than any traditional Southern Californian design. Take a self-guided walking tour of Comstock Historical Hill District to see these charming cottages, with their jaunty colors, uneven rooflines, beautiful gardens, and historical significance.

The fairy tale cottages of Carmel, CA were built by a man named Hugh Comstock, who arrived in Carmel in 1924. Comstock met and married a woman who made ragdolls, which she called Otsy-Totsy dolls. Comstock built a cottage on Torres St. for the two of them and named it Gretel. You'll see why at first glance, as it's straight out of a fairy tale. With a wonky stone chimney, ornate cornices, and a wavy-edged shake roof, this cottage is nestled into its ornate garden and landscaping. Next, Comstock built the cottage Hansel nearby, to act as a showroom for his wife's dolls. He also built one commercial building in the village, dubbed The Tuck Box, now home to a restaurant serving breakfast, lunch, and afternoon tea. Comstock eventually constructed several Tudor "fairy tale"-style cottages in the neighborhood, 21 of which remain today, all privately owned.
