THE KNOB
Hike out to The Knob in Woods Hole for a sunset and gorgeous views (just 3 miles away, you can drive to the trailhead or use our bikes).
The ferry horn echoes across the harbor as another boatload of travelers heads for Martha's Vineyard. But linger on the dock a moment: the salt marsh exhales its briny, green scent in the afternoon warmth, and the click of bicycle gears announces riders heading down the Shining Sea Bikeway. Falmouth is Cape Cod's gateway to the islands, but visitors who pause here before boarding often find reasons to extend the stay.
Unlike the seasonal towns on the Outer Cape, Falmouth stays open year-round. That changes the character. This is a place with locals who know your name by your third visit, restaurants that serve generations of regulars alongside tourists, and beaches that feel like discoveries rather than destinations.
The Shining Sea Bikeway earns its name. This 10.7-mile paved path connects Falmouth Village to Woods Hole, tracing the coastline past salt marshes, tidal inlets, and views of the Elizabeth Islands across Vineyard Sound. Rent bikes in the village and make a morning of it, stopping at beach overlooks along the way. The path is flat and family-friendly, but the scenery rivals any ride on the Cape.
Woods Hole anchors the bikeway's southern end. The village feels different from the rest of the Cape: research vessels at the docks, scientists walking to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, the Marine Biological Laboratory drawing students from around the world. The WHOI Ocean Science Exhibit Center explains the deep-sea research that happens here. The Steamship Authority ferry to Martha's Vineyard departs from the terminal, making Woods Hole a natural day trip or departure point for island adventures.
The beaches face Vineyard Sound, sheltered by the curve of the land. Old Silver Beach draws the biggest crowds for its clear water and long stretch of sand. Surf Drive Beach is closer to town and less hectic. Menauhant Beach stays quiet even in peak season. Back in the village, Main Street hosts art galleries, coffee shops, boutiques, and late night music venues frequented by the locals within an easy walk.
