Asheville Travel Guide: Discover the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina

The smell of hops drifts from brewery doors, mixing with mountain air that settles into the valley each evening. Asheville sits surrounded by Blue Ridge Mountain peaks, a small city that punches far above its weight in food, music, and art. Live bands spill sound onto the sidewalks while the Art Deco downtown glows warm against darkening ridges. This is the kind of place where people come for a weekend, which turns into a summer, and ultimately a quest for real estate.

Things to Do in Asheville

What draws the curious here has evolved. The mountains brought visitors for generations, while today's Asheville runs on creativity. Studios where artists work in public view, restaurants sourcing from nearby farms, a music scene that spans bluegrass to indie rock. The Blue Ridge Parkway curves along the ridgelines above, offering views that make the drive a particularly memorable one.

The Biltmore Estate remains the headliner, and it delivers on every promise of Gilded Age ambition. George Vanderbilt's 250-room mansion, the largest private home in America, took six years to build and still astonishes with its scale and detail. The awe-inspiring gardens designed by Frederick Law Olmsted are worth the visit alone. Plan a half-day at minimum; the winery and restaurants on the estate grounds can fill the rest.

Downtown is where the modern magic happens. The River Arts District fills former industrial buildings with working studios where you can watch (and buy directly from) potters, glassblowers, and painters at their craft. The Asheville Art Museum, reopened in 2019, showcases American art with regional connections. And Pack Square anchors the scene, with restaurants and bars spreading out in every direction.

The brewery density here is remarkable. Sierra Nevada and New Belgium built Eastern outposts in Asheville, joining dozens of local operations in a scene that draws pilgrims. Burial, Wicked Weed, and Hi-Wire are good starting points. For special occasions, Cúrate serves Spanish tapas that earned a James Beard Award for Outstanding Hospitality, and Chai Pani brings Indian street food to the South. They also won the James Beard Award for Outstanding Restaurant in 2022.
