BEER TRAIL
Overwhelmed by the enormity of Maine brewery options? The Maine Brewers' Guild is here to help... check out their great website to plan your route on the Maine Beer Trail.
Morning light warms the clapboard façades of sea captains' houses that have watched over this harbor for two centuries. Coffee drifts from village cafés as shopkeepers raise their awnings along Dock Square. By afternoon, the porches fill with rocking chairs and the ice cream lines grow long. Kennebunkport has welcomed summer visitors since the 1800s, and the rhythm hasn't changed much.
This is Maine's classic beach resort—a place small enough to know in an afternoon but charming enough to hold you for a week. And the village anchors everything: galleries showing maritime scenes, boutiques in historic buildings, restaurants where the lobster came in that morning. Beyond town, quiet roads wind past shingled cottages and granite shoreline, and the beaches stretch wide and sandy along Kennebunk's southern coast.
Dock Square anchors the village with galleries, boutiques, and ice cream shops packed into a few walkable blocks. Start with coffee, then browse galleries showing Maine landscapes and maritime scenes. When hunger strikes, The Clam Shack on the bridge has served fried clams and lobster rolls since 1968 where the line is part of the experience. For something more refined, Alisson's Restaurant offers upscale New England fare with views of the working harbor.
The beaches are worth the short drive from the village center. Gooch's Beach and Mother's Beach sit closest, sandy and calm enough for families with small children. Goose Rocks Beach, a few miles north, stretches for three miles and feels more secluded. Back on the water, kayaks and paddleboards launch from the river, and lobster boat tours depart from the town docks if you want to see how the catch makes it from trap to table.
Ocean Avenue deserves a drive or a long walk. The road hugs the coast past Spouting Rock, where incoming waves shoot spray through a rock formation, and continues to Walker's Point, the Bush family compound visible from the roadside. Along the way, the Wedding Cake House, a yellow Victorian layered with ornate Gothic trim, is one of the most photographed buildings in Maine.
