Maine Midcoast Travel Guide: Discover East Boothbay

The harbor is quiet at first light. Just the low rumble of diesel engines and the clatter of traps being stacked on deck. East Boothbay occupies the quiet side of the peninsula, away from the gift shops and tour buses of Boothbay Harbor. Herons stand motionless in the shallows. Colorful buoys stack on docks, each one marking someone's livelihood.

This is a working waterfront, where the houses are shingled and sturdy, built to take whatever the weather brings. Ocean Point marks the end of the road, where granite meets the Atlantic and the views stretch to the horizon. The pace here is set by tides and weather, not schedules. You come to East Boothbay to watch the boats work, eat what they bring in, and stay for the miraculous sunsets.

Things to Do in East Boothbay and Boothbay Harbor

Ocean Point Kitchen, right at the Bluebird Ocean Point Inn, looks out on Card Cove, where fishing families have worked these waters for generations. Pull up a stool at the bar, settle into the freshly renovated dining room, or bring a chair to the ocean's edge. The menu keeps it simple: locally caught seafood, seasonal salads, and a bar pouring Maine ales and well-made cocktails. It's the natural place to start and end each day.

The peninsula rewards exploration by car. Boothbay Harbor, the area's commercial hub, sits about 10 minutes around the water with restaurants, galleries, and boat tours that head out to see seals and lighthouses. The Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens spreads over 300 acres just outside the village—the largest botanical garden in New England, with woodland paths, coastal views, and a children's garden that can occupy a family for half a day.

Back on the water, kayaking tours explore the coves and islands, and fishing charters head out for stripers and bluefish. Robinson's Wharf in nearby Southport serves lobster on the dock, and Cabbage Island Clambakes runs summer boat excursions that combine the cruise with the feast.
