DARLING CAMBRIDGE
Darling is the kind of Cambridge hangout where bold flavors, good cocktails, and an inviting atmosphere make it easy to settle in for the night.
Ideas seem to hum in the air here, between the coffee shops and the lecture halls, the labs and the bookstores. Cambridge smells of espresso and old pages, of something baking and somewhere brewing. Scullers skim the Charles River at dawn while students and professors fill the brick sidewalks, walking fast in excited conversation.
Two of the world's great universities anchor this city, but Cambridge is more than its institutions. The neighborhoods each have their own character: Harvard Square's bookish bustle, Kendall Square's biotech energy, Central Square's late-night scruff. The Red Line rattles through it all, connecting everything.
Harvard Yard opens through iron gates onto lawns and Georgian brick that have barely changed since the 18th century. The Harvard Art Museums, three world-class collections in a Renzo Piano building, reward a full morning. The Peabody Museum holds treasures from around the world. Across town, MIT's campus offers a different kind of tour: modernist architecture, public art by Calder and Picasso, and corridors where the next big thing might be taking shape.
Central Square is the neighborhood heart, grittier and more real than Harvard Square's polished tourist appeal. 907 Main has two on-site restaurants here: Althea serves American fare with a New England twist at street level, while Saigon Babylon offers Vietnamese dishes and craft cocktails on the rooftop. Elsewhere in the square, Punjabi Dhaba serves cheap, excellent Indian food to crowds that pack the tiny dining room. Little Donkey offers inventive small plates in a buzzy space. Toscanini's has developed a cult following for ice cream worth crossing the river for. At night, The Middle East, where many Boston-area bands played their first shows, offers live music as it has since 1970.
For a change of pace, walk along the Charles River Esplanade, where the Boston skyline reflects on the water and crew teams glide past in the early morning. Rent a kayak from Community Boating and see the city from the water.
