The shorebirds arrive by the thousands, stopping on the Atlantic Flyway to rest in the salt marsh before continuing their migration. Plum Island is a barrier island off the Massachusetts coast, eleven miles long and mostly protected as the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge. The sound here is wind and birdsong and the wash of waves on sand. Dunes shift in the breeze. The marsh glows green and gold. The mainland is visible across the water but feels wonderfully far away.
This is an escape in the truest sense. No commercial development beyond a few cottages and a handful of places to eat. Great blue herons stand motionless in the shallows. The beach stretches south until it disappears. Lark has one property here, Blue – Inn on the Beach, 13 rooms sitting directly on the sand.
The Parker River National Wildlife Refuge covers most of the island, 4,662 acres of dunes, salt marsh, and tidal flats that draw more than 300 bird species throughout the year. The Hellcat Boardwalk Trail, the most popular route, loops through dune and marsh habitats where herons stand motionless in the shallows and shorebirds gather during fall migration. Observation towers give wider views across the estuary. On warm summer weekends, the refuge limits visitors by closing when parking lots fill, often by mid-morning. Guests at Blue already have the beach outside their door.
The beaches are the main event. Plum Island Beach stretches long and wide, with soft sand and open space that makes even busy summer days feel uncrowded at the southern end. Sandy Point State Reservation, at the island’s tip, offers a quieter stretch for walking. The water runs cold but swimmable by July. Kayaking the salt marshes at high tide, when the channels fill and the birds move through the shallows, is worth a morning.
For meals, Bob Lobster serves lobster rolls and fried clams at picnic tables overlooking the marsh on the drive to the island. The Plum Island Grille draws sunset crowds for drinks and fresh seafood with marsh views. Downtown Newburyport, ten minutes across the causeway, has the full range of restaurants when you’re ready for a longer evening out.
