History

Long before The Bow became a creative retreat by the harbor, this building held a different kind of craft. Originally established in 1871 as the Harris & Mathes Company, the space was part of the Portsmouth Brewing Company. By 1876, the brewery had taken on its final name and began producing everything from India Pale Ales to the intriguingly named Portsburger Lager.

This very building once served as the brewery’s warehouse, storing thousands of kegs as they fermented behind foot-thick brick walls, designed to maintain a steady temperature year-round. You can still feel the character of those original walls. This place is sturdy, resilient, and rich with stories.

It was eventually overshadowed by larger rivals and closed in 1917 with the start of Prohibition, the brewery’s legacy lives on. Today, The Bow carries forward that spirit of independent craftsmanship. No longer in kegs, but in the art, design, and experience of every guest who walks through our doors.
